I haven't heard of Tacoma being referred to as "a little Chicago" before. Bits of that seem to still make sense.

I'm not quite sure why things have developed the way they have around the light rail stations. With Gintz taking over, hopefully we can get that tree out of the side and bring this building back to life. The parking lot adjacent needs to be in-filled though.

Here is one possible re-wording:

Air pollution issues in Tacoma and Pierce County
The City of Tacoma and portions of Pierce County are currently failing the air pollution criteria for particulates set by the EPA. What role can Pierce County play to help reduce air pollution in the city limits of Tacoma?

Great pictures showing what was there before all of the building were torn down creating a dead zone by the Luzon along with Tollefson Plaza.

So large is the deadness in downtown, there are but two separate halves of downtown.

If that is what you are referring to, you may want to reword #7. It is pretty unclear as is.

Thanks for the feedback Rob.

How would you re-word the question?

Regarding item #7, I believe you are trying to refer to the recent ruling that air quality standards in Tacoma and parts of Pierce County exceed the new standards for particulates set by the Environmental Protection Agency. The Washington State Department of Ecology plays a role in designating the area as non-compliant, but it is an EPA standard for particulates allowed in the air. If that is what you are referring to, you may want to reword #7. It is pretty unclear as is.

I'm a little late, but I'm new to town and I just discovered you. This alley bit is awesome. Right up my alley, actually. When I first saw the headline I imagined referring people to the NYT article on Chicago ... but, no need, I see.

I would love to see some more on this topic with input from a bunch of alley experts. Bravo!

I remember when I was working there, several years ago, and the difference between how it looked then and how it looks today is just amazing. I am very interested to see how it will look once they have everything in place in a couple of years.

However, if the above video is right, and they have a bunch of people who can't speak English and don't understand what they are doing setting foundations; then, I would not want to live there! Nothing against the workers personally, but, I think that people that work on that site should be trained and do the job so that the buildings remain in an upright position! I'm just picky that way.

UGH!!!

I drove by that tattered Queen Anne and noticed an upper floor window is either being replaced or was smashed out. Curious about the ownership, I looked it up when I got home. My heart sank when I saw the name: Paul Post. He's one of the most notorious slumlords and has been involved with a lawsuit by the city forever. I understand it is now being heard in the state's supreme court. I just hope the house can outlast him or the lawsuit.

By the way, the house was constructed in 1892 and is one of the older homes I've seen in the area.

So sad to see the demise of Never Never Land.
My family went every year when I was little to picnic and see the sights at Point Defiance. I am glad that I took my children to see it all (and take pictures of them there) before it was trashed and vandalized. It is missed greatly...

I am all for going green, but there is a huge problem with the council's proposal. For starters, their recent decision to close the HOV lane in Tacoma off HWY16. The City even lobbied the state to close it. Why? So now, we are saying don't carpool or forget about it, since there is no back up today, but we will re-examine tomorrow. Then there is the fact that no council member even carpools or takes mass transit. Ask any of them. Do they own a pass or take the bus to council meetings? If transit is so wonderful, then take it to your council meetings. Lastly, why tell residents not to plant trees on their own property line? This is crazy. If there are no safety, utility lines, why does the city care? Are they going to go around town and pick up ever darn "free growing" tree that roots itself naturally along roadways or property? I doubt it.

So, before we claim we are committed to going green, try practicing what they preach!!!

Heather: The city has an arborist, try googling them.

Joanna: Somehow it doesn't surprise me that the tree program is not user friendly. I was surprised that there was a tree program at all. Better marketing and perhaps a revamp in the program is in order. Anyone at city hall reading this?

My neighborhood is conspicuously treeless, so yesterday I requested information about Tacoma's free street tree program. After reading the guidelines for planting street trees, I completely ran out of enthusiasm for this project. If I read the standards correctly (and I'm hoping I didn't), small trees can't be planted within 10 feet of a driveway or property line, 5 feet of an underground utility, 20 feet from another tree or 25 feet from a corner. This means that I can plant a total of. . .zero trees along the street. These guidelines also eliminate most of my neighbors. Though I'm still going to plant a few trees on my property, I'm really disappointed that the whole neighborhood won't be able to benefit from having street trees. Someone please tell me that I read the standards incorrectly. Please!

If anyone has a suggestion of a good source of information on tree species that do well in urban areas, that includes their rate of growth and size, please share.

We had to remove a tree from our front yard and we are trying to decide on replacements. As we all strive to plant more trees, we need to be sure that we are planting trees that fit and will thrive.
